Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Welcome to the Author Guidelines for Manuscript Submission to the East African Journal of Nursing. These guidelines provide detailed instructions to help authors prepare and format their submissions effectively.

  1. Structure: Manuscripts should follow a clear structure, including the following sections: Abstract, Introduction, Methodology, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Recommendations, and References.
  2. Formatting: Authors must adhere to the APA 7th edition formatting guidelines. This includes using 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spacing, and 1-inch margins.
  3. Abstract: Provide a concise summary of the study's objectives, methodology, key findings, and implications in approximately 150-250 words.
  4. Introduction: Clearly state the research problem, provide relevant background information, and articulate the study's objectives and research questions.
  5. Methodology: Describe the study design, sample size, data collection methods, and statistical analysis techniques employed. Include ethical considerations and approval.
  6. Results: Present the findings in a logical and organized manner using tables, figures, or graphs as appropriate. Provide necessary statistical measures and significance levels.
  7. Discussion: Interpret the results, relate them to existing literature, and highlight their implications. Discuss any limitations and suggest avenues for future research.
  8. Conclusion: Summarize the key findings, restate the study's significance, and draw a clear conclusion.
  9. Recommendations: Provide practical recommendations based on the study's findings and implications.
  10. References: Follow the APA 7th edition guidelines for formatting in-text citations and the reference list. Ensure all cited sources are included and properly formatted.

Example of reference list entry:

Smith, A., & Johnson, B. (2022). Title of Article. Journal of Nursing, 15(2), 123-145.

Authors are encouraged to review the APA 7th edition manual for additional guidance on formatting and citation styles. Compliance with these guidelines ensures clarity, consistency, and adherence to scholarly standards in the East African Journal of Nursing.

Clinical Nursing Practice

This section covers advancements, research, and innovations in direct patient care across hospital and community settings. It includes adult medical-surgical nursing, intensive care, perioperative care, and other clinical domains. Articles should aim to improve evidence-based clinical decision-making and patient outcomes.

Community and Public Health Nursing

Focused on preventive care, health promotion, and population health, this section invites research on community outreach, disease surveillance, health education, and primary healthcare strategies. Submissions should demonstrate how nursing interventions at the community level influence health indicators and systems resilience.

Maternal, Child, and Pediatric Nursing

This section highlights nursing research related to reproductive health, antenatal and postnatal care, neonatal care, and pediatric nursing. Manuscripts should address clinical practices, policy, or education that contribute to improved outcomes for mothers, infants, and children across diverse healthcare settings.

Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing

Dedicated to the promotion of mental well-being and care for individuals with psychiatric conditions, this section features studies on nursing interventions, therapeutic approaches, stigma reduction, and integrated mental health care. Interdisciplinary and culturally contextualized research is particularly encouraged.

Nursing Education and Leadership

This section supports scholarly work on pedagogy, curriculum development, student outcomes, faculty development, and leadership in nursing education and practice. Submissions should provide insight into how education and leadership strategies can enhance nursing capacity and healthcare delivery.
